Thirsty for more from the Camels - The Comet Newspaper - 24th May 2007
Camel News ONE band I went to see lately has left me thirsty for more - 20 Dead Camels.

My colleagues Steve and Damo had seen them before and had told me how good they were. But I never go on opinion alone and finally managed to catch them at the Red Lion in Stevenage - where they were effectively born - the other weekend. As we walked in Quarantine were already going strong and I must say I was mighty impressed by the band and their energy. The Stevenage-based four-piece had the crowd in a frenzy. Boy, do those lads bring the house down! But more about them another week.

20 Dead Camels had packed the Red that night. And it was strictly a one in, one out policy. The ska/reggae outfit have been around quite a few years now but show no sign of getting the hump.

Cliff said the name 20 Dead Camels first come about in 1984 when he was drinking in the Red Lion.

Cliff was in a band called Top Dead Centre at the time and he had the initials TDC painted on the van sides. One Friday night a drunk walked in and asked, "What does TDC stand for on the side of your van? Does it stand for Twenty Dead Camels?" And from then on the name was born.

They've had about 30 members in the band since then but founder members Cliff Cummings on guitar, Mark Fisher (Fish) on lead vox and Doug Carey on keyboards are still going strong. Other members include Mark Tompkins, bass, Neale Webb, drums, Andy Hills, saxophone, and Dave the Trombone.

By the end of the set Steve and I had moved nearer to the 'dance floor' and were individually dancing to the music in a manner I can't remember, you can't not! You know it's a good gig when you don't want to go home, the band leaves you wanting more. And 20 Dead Camels definitely did that. I want their tracks on my iPod as soon as poss and I might take a trip down the Vincent Bar on June 16 to catch them in action again.

Wayne Miller at the Red Lion said: "It was a fantastic night. They have a guaranteed large local following.

"It was a good turn out, I expect nothing but the best from the Camels.

"Quarantine were great as well, it's the same drummer, Neale, for both bands!"

Cliff from the Camels said: "That's how we generally do our gigs in Stevenage!"

He added: "During the next six to eight weeks we're going to be getting our brass section sorted out and we're looking for a female singer."

Welcome Andy (Sax) and Dave (Trombone)
Camel News Well now ya have it, the full Monty, well almost! We'd like to welcome to the Camels Andy Hills and Dave Prior, our two newest members and just what the Camels have been looking for. Yup we now have Sax and Trombone, our brass section. (Oh a trumpet player is always welcome to pop along too) and what a difference they make to the line up, now we’re back in ya face and raring to go…

Well anyway we off now till the Bad Manners gig in Bournemouth doing some hard rehearsing and getting the boys settled in, unfortunately they’ll not be with us on that day but look out for the full line up at the Rock in the Park festival in Stevenage on 17th June.

We are still auditioning for a female vocalist by the way so if you know anybody, tell them to get in touch. Email : info@20deadcamels.co.uk

  Welcome Neil
Camel News Well it’s a bit late as Neil has already been with us a few weeks and done a couple of gigs, but we would like to welcome Neil Webb as the new 20 Dead Camels drummer. Chris left due to commitments with his family and work, so in came Neil at short notice to save the shows we had lined up. Not only is he a top man on the drums but has some good ideas for backing vocals of which you can hear him doing at our performances...
